(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A one day training workshop has been held in Yei River County to increase public awareness and understanding of the Grievance Redress Mechanism and community participation in the ASSIST Energy Project.
The session brought together one hundred stakeholders from various community groups, government offices and local organisations.
The training was organised by the National Ministry of Energy and Dams in coordination with the Yei River County Government. Its purpose was to increase awareness on how communities can engage with the project and express concerns during implementation.
Topics discussed during the session included the objectives and activities of the ASSIST Project in Yei, community engagement roles, environmental and social risk management in the energy sector, prevention of gender based violence and sexual exploitation, grievance reporting procedures and security considerations in project areas.
Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme encouraged participants to listen carefully, participate actively and contribute their views, stating that the training will support a clear relationship between the community and project implementers.
Speaking on behalf of the National Ministry of Energy and Dams, Eng. Jimmy Jake, team leader for Component Two of the project, noted that the project is designed to improve access to power in Yei. Eng. Jake said the Component Two budget is 13 million United States Dollars, which is equal to about 92.3 billion South Sudanese Pounds, based on the current exchange rate of 7,100 SSP for one US Dollar.
He explained that the project is a mini grid pilot with an estimated generation capacity of 3 megawatts of solar power, together with 12 megawatt hours of battery storage, connected to 1.4 megawatts from the existing diesel power plant.
The distribution network will also be upgraded to 33 kilovolt lines, supported by concrete poles, and the project includes the installation of around 3,000 street lights.
According to officials, the project aims to electrify about 10,000 households, including host communities and refugees, and around 400 commercial and public institutions in Yei.
The training closed with a call for continued cooperation between government, local leaders and residents to ensure that the benefits of the project are realised smoothly and fairly.
