(JOHANNESBURG) – South Sudan’s National Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk, delivered the closing address at the Global SME Ministerial Conference in Johannesburg on 25 July 2025, urging stronger international cooperation to support small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
The minister’s remarks brought the landmark gathering to a close, following several days of intensive discussions and high level engagements.
The conference brought together trade ministers, policymakers, investors and representatives from global institutions, including the International Trade Centre.
The event focused on finding practical solutions to the challenges faced by SMEs around the world, with an emphasis on innovation, access to finance, and inclusive economic development.
Minister Kuol described the conference as a “crucial platform” for dialogue and opportunity sharing. She underlined the importance of SMEs as key drivers of growth, particularly in developing economies like South Sudan, where small businesses form the majority of the private sector.
In her concluding remarks, Kuol called for “collective responsibility in unlocking the full potential of SMEs.” She emphasised that improved access to global markets, fair trade policies and targeted investment can empower millions of entrepreneurs across Africa and beyond.
Alongside the official sessions, the trade minister held several side meetings with international leaders and potential investors to promote trade and investment opportunities in South Sudan. These talks focused on sectors such as agriculture, energy and manufacturing, which the government sees as essential for post conflict economic recovery and sustainable development.
The South Sudanese delegation also took the opportunity to highlight recent policy reforms aimed at easing the cost of doing business in the country. These include streamlined business registration processes, tax incentives for new investors and improved regulatory frameworks for SMEs. The government hopes these changes will attract both regional and international partnerships.
Participants at the Johannesburg conference expressed optimism that the discussions would lead to real outcomes, especially in financing mechanisms and market access for small enterprises. The event concluded with a commitment to continued collaboration among governments, financial institutions, and development partners.
