South Sudan to Host Eastern Africa Civil Society Forum
(JUBA) – South Sudan will host the next meeting of the Eastern Africa Civil Society Forum, bringing together representatives from across the region to discuss issues of development, governance and regional cooperation.
The announcement was made by Mr Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), one of South Sudan’s leading civil society groups.
Mr Yakani said the decision to hold the forum in Juba reflects growing confidence in South Sudan’s civil society leadership and its contribution to regional dialogue.
The forum includes civil society representatives from South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Burundi, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.
According to Mr Yakani, more organisations are expected to join the platform as it expands its focus on strengthening participation, accountability, and governance across the region.
He said the gathering will provide an opportunity for regional civil society leaders to share experiences, build partnerships, and discuss policy issues affecting communities in Eastern Africa:
“Hosting this forum in Juba is an important moment for South Sudan. It shows that despite the challenges, our civil society remains active and committed to regional cooperation.”
The forum will be supported by several regional and continental partners, including the African Union (AU), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the East African Community (EAC), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
Organisers say the meeting will focus on practical measures to strengthen civic engagement, promote peacebuilding, and improve cooperation between civil society and governments.
It is also expected to highlight the role of non-governmental organisations in supporting regional integration and achieving the objectives of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
According to CEPO, the event will also feature discussions on youth participation, women’s leadership, climate change, and the use of digital tools for advocacy and transparency.
