(KINSHASA) – Emmanuel Christian University (ECU), a private university based in Yei River County, South Sudan, is among the institutions representing the country at the ongoing Inter University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) conference in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
The three day regional meeting, which brings together vice chancellors from universities across all eight East African Community (EAC) member states, focuses on improving the quality of higher education in the region.
Daniel Ohide, the Vice Chancellor of Emmanuel Christian University, said ECU’s participation is part of its commitment to promoting regional collaboration and academic excellence.
“Representing Emmanuel Christian University, we are honoured to take part in this strategic dialogue,” Ohide told Access Radio. “The Inter-University Council for East Africa is a platform helping us develop quality education across the region, which is vital for building the Africa we want and the Africa that aligns with our values.”
The Kinshasa event is part of IUCEA’s annual conference, which aims to foster cooperation among universities and implement the educational vision of the East African Community.
Emmanuel Christian University’s presence reinforces its role in shaping academic policy not only in South Sudan but in the wider region.

South Sudan’s delegation at the conference also includes Professor Robert Mayom Deng, Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba and current IUCEA Chairperson Professor Mamuor Chuol Turuk, Vice Chancellor, Upper Nile University and Father Dr Matthew Pagan, Vice Chancellor of the Catholic University of South Sudan.
Ohide noted that the conference, which ends on 31 July, is expected to conclude with recommendations on how to enhance university education across East Africa.
“We expect this conference to lay strong foundations for cooperation among institutions and to generate actionable strategies for improving education standards in our universities,” he said.
Emmanuel Christian University, established in Yei, has grown to become one of South Sudan’s leading private academic institutions.
