(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Thirty five community leaders in Kondeko Boma, Yei River County have completed a three day training aimed at improving skills in resolving conflicts, encouraging dialogue, promoting reconciliation and handling mediation. The initiative focused on peaceful co-existence at the grass root level.
The training was organised by the Community Development Center, a local organisation based in the area. It followed concerns over increasing cases of disputes, disagreements, sexual harassment and gender based violence in the community.
Sebit Martin, the organisation’s executive director, said the sessions equipped youth leaders, women representatives and traditional chiefs with practical skills to address domestic and communal disputes.
“This week, we hosted a training here in our office in Kondeko on gender equality and conflict resolution. The important part is that we did it with the people who keep the community running – local chiefs, youth leaders, women representatives and faith leaders,” he said.
Sebit said the goal is to build strong local systems that can encourage peace without waiting for outside intervention.
“Our belief is that change starts at home. When we secure peace and equality in our own areas, we can carry that progress anywhere. We want our community to become a model for peace,” he added.
Alice Siyama, who leads the Yei River County Women Association, has repeatedly appealed to organisations and the local government to support reconciliation and peace efforts in the county.
“There are many issues affecting peace in Yei. This needs joint work from NGOs and the government so that other parts of Yei, including the villages, can enjoy peace and unity,” she said.
Yei River County has faced ongoing political violence, leaving residents trapped in cycles of trauma, domestic violence and revenge attacks. These conditions have slowed down reconciliation efforts and strained relationships among communities.
