Yei County Inaugurates New Public Prosecutor’s Office

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has officially handed over a newly constructed Public Prosecutor’s Office to local authorities in Yei Town Payam, Yei River County.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen justice institutions and promote fairness and accountability across South Sudan.

During the handover ceremony, the Commissioner of Yei River County, Hon. Emmanuel Taban Seme, commended the initiative, describing it as vital to the enforcement of the rule of law.

He said the new office would help ensure that both criminal and public interest cases are handled in a professional and impartial manner:

“The importance of this office lies in the critical legal and administrative work it performs to guarantee justice and fairness.”

The construction of the building was supported by UNMISS, which continues to assist the government in improving justice infrastructure and enhancing the capacity of local authorities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Njoki Rahab Kinyanjui, the Head of the UNMISS Juba Field Office, praised the cooperation between UNMISS and the government.

She announced that UNMISS will provide mobility support to the newly established department to help its staff reach communities that need legal services.

Public prosecutors play an important role in upholding justice at the county level. Their responsibilities include investigating crimes, filing charges, prosecuting offenders, and protecting victims and witnesses.

The new facility in Yei is expected to make these services more accessible and efficient.

Local officials hope the new office will not only speed up case handling but also build public confidence in the justice system, which has faced challenges due to limited resources and infrastructure, according to the office of the county commissioner.
