(JUBA) – The Council of Ministers, in a meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday, approved South Sudan’s 2025–2026 fiscal year budget, set at 7 trillion South Sudanese Pounds, equal to approximately 985 million US Dollars ($1 = 7,100 SSP).
Following the approval, the Cabinet instructed the Minister of Finance and Planning to present the budget to Parliament for debate and final endorsement.
The Minister of Information, Michael Makuei Lueth, said the proposed budget includes a deficit of 1.5 trillion SSP, around 211 million USD. The Minister of Finance has committed to improving revenue collection to help reduce the shortfall.
During the session, the Minister of Roads and Bridges, Simon Mijok Mijak, outlined plans to construct a road linking South Sudan to Ethiopia, eventually connecting to the port of Djibouti. This route is expected to become a vital corridor for exporting crude oil to international markets.
President Kiir directed all ministers to improve the performance of their institutions, stressing the importance of efficiency and accountability in government operations.
In a move to prevent revenue losses, the Cabinet banned unnecessary tax and duty exemptions, which it said have cost the government billions of SSP.
The Council also resolved that no individual may sign loans on behalf of the government without following proper legal procedures, a step intended to safeguard the nation’s financial integrity.
