Former Yei Commissioner Rev. Gen. Wai Wai Laid to Rest

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The late Rev. Gen. Elia Youna Wai Wai, a respected former commissioner of Yei River County and a prominent figure in South Sudan’s public life, was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Marakanye, about three miles along the Yei – Juba road in Yei town.

The burial drew hundreds of mourners from across Central Equatoria State who came together to honour his life of service and commitment to peace.

The funeral ceremony was marked by deep emotion as local leaders, relatives, and community members gathered to pay their final respects. Many described him as a selfless leader, a unifying figure, and a man who dedicated his life to building his community and nation.

Speaking at the burial, Hon. Emmanuel Taban Seme, the Commissioner of Yei River County, described the late Rev. Gen. Wai Wai as a patriot and visionary leader whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations:

“Rev. Gen. Wai Wai was a man of great integrity, courage, and determination,” Hon. Taban said. “He played a crucial role in the struggle for our nation’s independence and continued serving our people with humility and faith.”

The late Rev. Gen. Wai Wai was known for his tireless advocacy for peace, reconciliation, and community development. Even after his retirement from active public service, he remained active as a spiritual leader, promoting unity and compassion among the people of Yei.

According to family members, Rev. Gen. Wai Wai passed away on 29 December 2025 at Gudele Hospital after a long battle with diabetes and hypertension. He was 88 years old at the time of his death. His passing has left a deep void among those who knew him as both a public servant and a moral guide.

Born in 1937, Rev. Gen. Wai Wai devoted much of his life to public service and faith. Friends and colleagues recalled his role in promoting reconciliation during difficult periods in South Sudan’s history, particularly in Yei River County.

At the funeral, mourners celebrated his achievements through songs, prayers, and tributes that reflected his lasting influence on both local governance and the church. Speakers urged the younger generation to emulate his example of humility, discipline, and national pride.

Family representatives expressed gratitude to the community for their support during the funeral, noting that the large turnout was a testament to the late leader’s impact on people’s lives. They described him as a father figure whose wisdom guided many in both public and private life.
