(JUBA) – A new mobile application called AlertME is helping people in South Sudan report security threats and community disputes more quickly. The app is being used in several states to send alerts about cattle raids, border tensions and local disagreements straight to peace monitors, chiefs and security officials.
In the past, information would move slowly through word of mouth or delayed radio messages. Many incidents went unreported or were only known after violence had already spread.
With the AlertME app, reports can be sent immediately with a few simple steps, even by people who are not used to smartphones.
Peace monitors in Warrap, Lakes, Jonglei and Central Equatoria have started using the reports during their regular security meetings. They say it helps them understand which areas need quick attention. Some police officers and humanitarian workers have joined the platform so they can respond more quickly.
Mobile phone use has grown across South Sudan in towns like Wau, Bor and Torit. Basic smartphones now cost less. This has made it easier for farmers, traders and young people to buy devices and join digital platforms like AlertME.
App Name | Main Use | Users |
---|---|---|
AlertME | Early conflict reporting | Community members, peace monitors, local leaders |
Some peacebuilding groups are now exploring new ways to use the app for weather updates, transport alerts and information for farmers and traders. They believe faster communication will not only help reduce violence but also protect markets and livestock movement.
Traders in border towns like Nimule and Kaya say that when rumours of fighting spread without confirmation, people often close shops or stop travelling. A reliable reporting system could help reduce confusion and keep businesses running.
Developers of the app say the most important test will be how quickly authorities respond to alerts. If people see that their reports lead to action, they will trust and use the platform more often. If not, they may return to silence.
The AlertME app is supported by development partners for now, but local groups are calling for the government and telecom companies to also take part to ensure the system grows.
