(LUSAKA) – South Sudan will begin the construction and installation of its national fibre optic cable in December, connecting the country to the Indian Ocean through Kenya in a major step toward improving internet access and digital infrastructure.
Telecommunication Undersecretary Engineer Thomas Gatkuoth made the announcement on Wednesday during a panel discussion on digital governance in Africa held in Lusaka, Zambia.
The project will cover about 2,400 kilometres and is expected to significantly reduce the cost of internet services, enhance connectivity, and improve access to information across the country.
Engineer Gatkuoth said the initiative is part of South Sudan’s broader plan to strengthen digital infrastructure and foster economic growth. He explained that once completed, the cable will connect South Sudan to the international fibre network, enabling faster communication and supporting sectors such as education, trade, and public service delivery.
“This project will place South Sudan among the digitally connected nations of the region,” he said. “It is an important milestone that will boost innovation, support e-governance, and open new opportunities for our youth and business communities.”
During the panel, Engineer Gatkuoth also spoke about the need for strong regional cooperation and investment to support Africa’s digital transformation. He invited international investors to explore business opportunities in South Sudan, particularly in the energy and power sectors, which he said remain critical to sustaining the country’s digital growth.
“We are creating a conducive environment for investors,” he added. “The government is ready to work with partners interested in helping us build a resilient digital economy.”
The Lusaka forum brought together policymakers, technology experts, and investors to discuss key issues related to digital governance, infrastructure, and innovation across the continent. According to organisers, the event will continue with two additional sessions focusing on partnerships and investment opportunities, as well as cyber security, data protection, and digital inclusion.
Officials from South Sudan’s Ministry of Information, Communication, and Technology said the fibre optic project aligns with the country’s Vision 2040 strategy, which aims to position South Sudan as a competitive and connected nation in East Africa.
