Lainya Youth Tackle Transport Challenges
(LAINYA COUNTY) – In Lainya County, young people have taken the lead in improving a main road that has long caused difficulties for transport, trade and access to essential services.
The Lainya County Youth Association, under the leadership of Chairman Emmanuel Khemis, has started rehabilitating the road connecting Logwili to surrounding areas.
The road has suffered severe damage, including deep potholes, erosion and blocked drainage, making travel difficult for both vehicles and pedestrians.
During a recent visit to Logwili, Mr. Khemis said the road’s poor condition has had a wide impact on the local population:
“Today, I visited the Logwili area and saw the serious damage to the main road linking our communities. The potholes and poor drainage make travel very difficult and unsafe, affecting transport, trade and daily life.”
Mr. Khemis called on county authorities, development partners and humanitarian organisations to support the rehabilitation and long term maintenance of the road.
“The current state of this road not only disrupts the movement of goods and services but also threatens the safety of travellers and limits access to health centres, schools and markets. The people of Lainya deserve a safe and reliable road,” he added.
Local residents have welcomed the youth initiative, saying it shows a strong sense of responsibility and community ownership. They hoped the work will improve the movement of agricultural products, increase access to education and healthcare and boost local economic activity.
Mr. Khemis emphasised the need for collaboration to ensure lasting improvements:
“I urge the county leadership and development partners to prioritise this road and act quickly to restore mobility and economic activity. Together, we can ensure our communities stay connected and our youth thrive.”
The youth led work in Lainya comes as attention is focused on the Juba-Lainya-Yei-Morobo road, a key national route linking South Sudan to Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The road was approved for tarmacking under the national government’s oil for roads programme, but previous work, including bush clearance started two years ago, left the road in poor condition.
Residents in Lainya, Yei and Morobo have long called for reconstruction of the road to honour the 21 year struggle for South Sudan’s independence.
