(OPINION / EMMANUEL KHAMIS PETER) – I strongly condemn the heinous attack that took place in Tokori Boma of Lasu Payam, Yei River County, where at least three women were gang raped and four men abducted by unidentified armed men.
Such barbaric acts are unacceptable and represent a grave violation of human rights and human dignity.
This incident poses serious threats to socio-economic development in Yei River County, particularly in rural communities. Violence of this nature disrupts livelihoods, displaces families, and erodes community trust. Farmers are forced to abandon their fields, markets collapse, and children are denied access to education when fear dominates daily life.
Armed groups must recognize their responsibility to protect civilians. Their role should be to safeguard communities, ensure the safety of women and children, and uphold the rights of persons with disabilities. Any deviation from this duty is a betrayal of both national and international humanitarian principles.
The perpetrators of this attack have committed serious crimes, including sexual violence, abduction, and violations of international humanitarian law. These acts are punishable under both domestic and international legal frameworks. Accountability must be pursued to ensure justice for the victims and to deter future atrocities.
Our deepest sympathy goes to the women and men affected by this brutal attack in Tokori Boma. The suffering endured by the three women—two of them lactating mothers—and the four abducted men is unimaginable. These victims represent the heart of our community, and their pain is shared by all of Yei River County.
We stand in solidarity with the victims and their families, recognizing the courage it takes to endure such trauma. Their experiences underscore the urgent need to strengthen protection for civilians, especially women, children, and persons with disabilities, who are disproportionately affected by violence.
