(TORE PAYAM, YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A community volunteer teacher in Tore Payam of Yei River County is appealing to the government, development partners, and well-wishers to support a local school with urgently needed scholastic materials.
Christopher Taharir told Access Radio on Friday afternoon that more than 80 primary school pupils are currently attending classes at Mary Immaculate Primary School under poor infrastructure and limited teaching and learning materials.
He said the school has officially begun classes, with more learners continuing to report.
“They are facing a lot of challenges here. The whole school needs to be renovated, and the school is lacking scholastic materials such as sitting benches, books, blackboards, chalk, and other teaching aid kits.”
According to Taharir, the school is experiencing an increase in enrollment, including returnees from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
“At the moment we have registered 81 pupils, and more are still coming, especially the returnees from Meri Refugee Camp in Congo and those in the remote villages of Tore. We are still registering more learners for the next three weeks.”
The community school is currently operating at Mary Immaculate Primary School, owned by the Catholic Diocese of Yei.
The aftermath of the 2016 conflict continues to negatively affect the education and health sectors in Yei River County.
