(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A local non governmental organisation in Yei River County is taking a leading role in promoting green climate initiatives and environmental protection across the county.
The Community Development Center (CDC), headed by Executive Director Sebit Martin, is raising a variety of fruit tree seedlings, including local avocado, jackfruit and guavas as part of a programme designed to restore degraded ecosystems and support climate resilience.
Mr Martin told Access Radio that the initiative addresses climate challenges by reducing the effects of extreme heat, regenerating biodiversity and capturing carbon:
“This grassroots initiative addresses the climate crisis by reducing the impacts of extreme heat, restoring degraded ecosystems, capturing carbon, and regenerating biodiversity”.
The programme also focuses on improving livelihoods for families and communities.
“At the same time, this project strengthens food security, creates sustainable livelihoods, and builds economic resilience within our communities,” he added.
The seedlings are set to be distributed to households, public institutions and schools in the county, providing long term benefits to both the environment and local communities.
According to Mr Martin, the initiative fosters climate justice, environmental stewardship and hope for future generations:
“We are cultivating climate justice, environmental stewardship and intergenerational hope by raising these seedlings for future distribution. This is living proof that collective, community driven action is among the most powerful tools in the fight against climate change”.
The Executive Director also called on government bodies, donors, partners and the wider public to support environmental protection efforts:
“We invite donors, partners and climate champions to join us on this mission. Your support means more seedlings raised, more communities empowered and more lives transformed. Together, let’s accelerate climate resilience and create a greener, healthier and more sustainable future for all”.
