(Juba) – South Sudan is set to host the 10th East Africa Health and Scientific Conference from June 25 to 27, 2025, in the capital, Juba.
The regional event will be held under the theme “Addressing Health Priorities and Advancing the East Africa Agenda,” and will focus on strengthening regional cooperation in healthcare systems across East Africa.
Speaking ahead of the event, South Sudan’s National Minister of Health, Dr. Yolanda Awel Deng, said preparations were well underway.
She described the upcoming conference as an important opportunity for South Sudan to collaborate more closely with its neighbors on healthcare policy, research, and service delivery.
According to Dr. Awel Deng, the conference will support the objectives outlined in Article 118 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community (EAC), which promotes cooperation in health among member states.
The conference will bring together health professionals, researchers, policymakers, and experts from across the EAC member states.
The focus will be on improving public health, responding to disease outbreaks, and building resilient health systems in the region.
The event is also aligned with the EAC Common Market Protocol, which encourages joint regional action on shared priorities, including health.
Minister Awel Deng also announced that South Sudan has submitted 78 accepted scientific abstracts for presentation at the conference.
She said this was a significant step for the country’s health sector and showed growing interest among South Sudanese researchers in contributing to regional scientific dialogue.
“This opens a great window for South Sudan to share its scientific health concerns and findings with other experts from the region,” she said.
The hosting of the 10th EAC Health and Scientific Conference is seen as a major achievement for South Sudan, which joined the East African Community in 2016.
With many South Sudanese still lacking access to quality healthcare, experts believe the conference will also serve as a space for sharing innovative solutions and attracting investment in the health sector.
Topics expected to be discussed include cross-border disease surveillance, healthcare workforce training, digital health tools, and funding for universal health coverage.
