(JUBA) – South Sudanese media leader Ayaa Irene Lokang has been named among Africa’s 100 Most Influential Women, a recognition that places her within the continent’s leading female achievers. The award was announced ahead of the fourth African Women Awards, which will be held in Kigali, Rwanda, in November 2025.
The African Women Awards celebrate women who have made exceptional contributions in their professions, communities and societies. The awards highlight individuals whose leadership and conduct have brought about positive change across Africa.
Ayaa Irene serves as Director of the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) and was selected for her role in advancing media development and promoting freedom of expression in South Sudan. She will officially receive the award in Kigali during a red carpet gala ceremony, where honourees will be presented with plaques and certificates.
Her recognition places her within the “She Achievers Network,” a platform of outstanding women across Africa who serve as role models in various fields. Organisers of the awards said the purpose of the event is not only to honour professional excellence but also to inspire younger generations of women leaders across the continent.
This achievement also continues a series of honours for AMDISS leadership. In November 2024, Veronica Lucy Gordon, a pioneer member of the organisation’s executive board, received the same award during the African Women Awards held in Ethiopia.
The media association said the recognition of South Sudanese women at the continental level recognises the increasing visibility and influence of the country’s female leaders in social and economic transformation in a country which continues to face challenges in peace building, governance and economic development.
