Local residents of Yei town Mourning Late Isaac Abe
(YEI RIVER COUNTY) — A National Security Service officer was shot dead by unknown armed assailants at 9:45 Pm Saturday night, according to local officials and residents.
The deceased, identified as Isaac Abe, popularly known as “Short,” was serving as a National Security officer and was widely recognized in the Hai-Gabaat area for his role in maintaining community safety.
Authorities and eyewitnesses said the attack occurred near a stream and cemetery on the outskirts of Hai-Gabaat along the Gabat-Mission street, an area residents have previously described as vulnerable to gang-related incidents.
Local officials condemned the killing, describing the late officer as committed and courageous. They noted that he had actively responded to security threats in the community and had previously assisted in addressing criminal activities, including intervening in attempted attacks.
On Monday, local residents, family members, soldiers and county government officials gathered at a Abe’s funeral services in show of solidarity to the family of the late.
Yei River County Security Coordinator Juma David Augustin urged residents to remain united and support efforts to restore peace and stability.
“This violence is affecting everyone. Today it is one person, tomorrow it could be another. We must stand together and reject such acts,” he said.
Speaking during the funeral, National Security representative Peter James described the late officer as dependable and dedicated, highlighting his role in maintaining security in Hai-Gabaat. He noted that Abe remained vigilant even while off duty, frequently alerting authorities and responding to incidents.
He also recalled an incident in which the officer intervened in an attempted rape, acting swiftly to prevent harm.
County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo emphasized the need for stronger community cooperation to address insecurity, urging local leaders to form committees and work closely with residents to enhance protection.
Meanwhile, Hai-Gabaat headwoman Sabina Yabu highlighted the officer’s contribution to local safety, noting that the area where he was killed has been a hotspot for gang-related attacks.
Authorities say investigations into the killing are ongoing, but no suspects have been identified. The incident has shaken the Yei community, with residents calling for justice and stronger security measures, particularly in high-risk areas.
