(JUBA) – South Sudanese officials have praised China as one of the country’s most reliable economic partners during celebrations in Juba marking the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Speaking at the ceremony, Cabinet Affairs Minister Martin Elia Lomuro said South Sudan continues to look to China as an example of economic growth and social development.
He said China has shown how discipline and careful planning can lift millions out of poverty. He added that President Salva Kiir had sent a message of congratulations to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Minister Lomuro said South Sudan hopes to apply similar strategies by investing in infrastructure, education and local innovation. He described China as a trusted friend since independence in 2011, noting Chinese support for the oil industry, road networks, medical facilities and aviation control systems.
Chinese Ambassador Ma Qiang said China’s success came through clear national plans and steady investment in factories, agriculture and social services.
He said nearly 800 million citizens had moved out of poverty, showing that progress is possible with cooperation. He added that China will continue to support South Sudan through scholarships, emergency aid and construction projects such as the Juba to Rumbek Highway, the expansion of Juba Teaching Hospital and the headquarters of the Bank of South Sudan.
Government officials at the event said national elections are still expected to take place in December 2026. They said China’s principles of mutual respect and non interference provide a useful model for international relations.
The event featured cultural performances by South Sudanese and Chinese children, which organisers said reflected the growing connection between the two nations.
South Sudan continues to rely heavily on oil as its main source of income and sees China as a major partner in rebuilding services and diversifying the economy.
