(JUBA) – Members of the Indian community in Juba have organised a clean up exercise in and around the Hindu Temple as part of a wider public hygiene campaign.
The initiative described as a Swachhata Drive was led by Sanjay Patel, a recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award. Volunteers gathered to collect litter, clear debris and improve the general cleanliness of the temple surroundings.
The Embassy of India in South Sudan praised the effort, calling it a positive example of community service and responsibility. In a message shared online, the embassy said it was encouraging to see the Indian diaspora actively taking part in national campaigns, even while living abroad.
The Swachhata Abhiyan, which began in India as a cleanliness movement, has since been adopted by Indian communities in different countries. The embassy noted that the continued participation of the diaspora reflects both a commitment to public welfare and a strong cultural link to their homeland.
While the event was small in scale, it has drawn attention to the role of migrant communities in supporting public initiatives in South Sudan. Similar activities are expected to follow, with organisers aiming to expand the clean-up efforts to nearby neighbourhoods.
Local observers welcomed the effort, saying that such voluntary events help foster cooperation between residents of different backgrounds. The Hindu Temple in Juba serves not only as a place of worship but also as a community gathering point for cultural and social events.
No financial figures were announced for the exercise, which was carried out entirely through voluntary labour and donations from within the community.
