(JUBA) – The Central Bank of South Sudan has signed a currency management agreement with De La Rue, a British company that prints banknotes for more than 140 countries and is one of the world’s largest commercial currency printers.
The agreement is meant to improve the handling of South Sudanese pounds and build public confidence in the national currency.
The Minister of Finance and Planning, Kuol Daniel Ayulo, convened the meeting that led to the signing. The Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Addis Ababa Othow, and representatives of De La Rue, led by the firm’s Chief Executive Officer, Clive Vacher, attended the session in Juba on 3 September 2026.
After extensive deliberation, the Bank of South Sudan (BoSS) and De La Rue signed a Memorandum of Understanding on currency management partnership. The agreement allows De La Rue to provide specialised technical expertise and support across key areas of the currency lifecycle.
These areas include currency planning and forecasting, quality management and currency circulation. The support is expected to boost public confidence in South Sudanese pounds.
De La Rue, which was founded in 1821 and is listed on the London Stock Exchange, also designs and produces passports, tax stamps and security documents for governments worldwide. The company has previously worked with central banks across Africa on currency redesign and security upgrades.
The partnership agreement also paves the way for building sustainable currency management capacity at the Bank of South Sudan. It will support modernisation of the currency management framework in line with international standards and best practices.
The agreement is also expected to strengthen the security, resilience and integrity of the country’s monetary and fiscal system.
The Ministry of Finance and Planning said the meeting discussed means of strengthening fiscal and monetary cooperation between the country’s treasury and De La Rue. The company is recognised for its widespread expertise and experience in currency and cash management globally.
The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Thok Turuk Thok, the First Undersecretary for Finance, Malual Tap, and technical support staff from both the Bank of South Sudan and the Ministry of Finance and Planning.
The Department of Communication and Media at the Ministry of Finance and Planning confirmed the signing in a statement issued on Thursday 3rd September 2026.
