(ACCRA, GHANA) – Senior officials from the Bank of South Sudan are in Accra to take part in the Cedi at Sixty International Currency Conference, an event that has brought together delegates from more than forty three African central banks.
The Second Deputy Governor for Administration and Finance, Rita Nyankiir Akoon, is leading the delegation, which includes the Director General for Financial Markets and Payment Systems, Barac Deng Aguer, and other officials.
The conference focuses on currency management, financial technology and the future of cash in African economies. It offers a platform where central banks share experiences on improving currency handling, maintaining public trust in national currencies and strengthening payment systems.
Officials say the event is important for South Sudan as the country seeks to improve the way its currency is managed, including production, circulation and security features.
The participation also comes at a time when South Sudan continues to face pressure on its financial system and is working to strengthen confidence in the South Sudanese Pound.
As part of the programme, the South Sudan delegation toured the Currency Research Centre in Accra. The centre was established in 2015 and is one of West Africa’s modern facilities for cash processing and research.
The team received a detailed briefing on the technologies used to support currency management and improve efficiency across the financial sector.
The Bank of South Sudan said engagement with regional institutions is important for building a stronger financial system at home.
Officials noted that lessons from the conference will help inform future plans on currency operations and payment systems in South Sudan.
