(JUBA) – South Sudan has named a group of referees and assistant referees approved to officiate in international football matches in 2026, marking a positive step for the country’s growing presence in the global game. The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Central Referees Committee of the South Sudan Football Federation, Samson Callisto.
According to the federation, the list of officials was formally presented by the Federation Secretary, Bak Salva, to the Technical Director of Referees, Doboul Paul Pouk. All the referees and assistant referees on the list have received approval from the world football governing body FIFA, allowing them to take charge of matches beyond South Sudan.
Officials at the federation say the approval reflects steady progress in referee training and development in the country. It also highlights growing confidence from international football bodies in the standards of officiating coming from South Sudan.
Those selected include five referees who will serve as main match officials and six assistant referees. Their roles will involve officiating regional and international competitions, representing South Sudan on a wider football stage.
The federation noted that international exposure will help the referees improve their skills and experience, which is also expected to benefit domestic competitions. Better trained referees are seen as important for fair play, discipline and the overall quality of football in South Sudan.
Football observers say the announcement is encouraging for young officials who hope to follow a similar path. It also supports the wider goal of strengthening football institutions in the country, both on and off the pitch.
The South Sudan Football Federation said it remains committed to investing in referee education and ensuring officials meet international standards. The selection of referees for 2026 international duty is viewed as another sign of gradual growth in South Sudan football.
