(BOR) – The wife of South Sudan’s Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, Major General Mary Akuch Panyang, was laid to rest on Wednesday, 16 July 2025, in her hometown of Bor, the capital of Jonglei State.
Major General Akuch passed away on Friday, 11 July, after suffering heart complications. She died at Gudele Hospital in the capital, Juba, according to a family source. Her death marked the loss of one of South Sudan’s respected female military figures, known for her contributions to the country’s liberation struggle and post independence national service.
A funeral representative for Minister Michael Makuei Lueth, Mr Ateny Pech, announced early that final funeral prayers will be held this coming Saturday in three locations in Juba, Bor and Kampala to allow friends and family across the region to pay their last respects.
Late Major General Mary Akuch Panyang was not only a senior official’s spouse but also a notable figure in her own right. She was a sister to former Jonglei State Governor Philip Aguer and among the rare group of women who rose through the military ranks due to their active role during South Sudan’s fight for independence. Her passing is seen as a loss not only to her family but to the wider community of veterans and citizens who witnessed her public service.
The government has not disclosed funeral expenditure details. However, given the rising costs of public ceremonies in South Sudan many observers expressed appreciation for the multi-location prayers, which will enable mourners in multiple cities to participate.
The late officer’s burial brought together members of the public, political leaders, military personnel and church representatives, who praised her courage, discipline and dedication to the country’s development.
