(JUBA) – The Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services (MOICT&PS) of South Sudan, in partnership with the World Bank, has announced plans to begin laying a fibre optic cable from Kenya to South Sudan early next year.
The project is expected to significantly improve the country’s internet connectivity and link it more closely with regional networks.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Mabe Emmanuel, Secretary General of the Universal Service and Access Fund (USAF), following the Ministry’s 13th leadership meeting held in Juba.
According to Mr Emmanuel, the Ministry, led by Minister Michael Makuei Lueth, is currently in the process of recruiting technical teams to carry out feasibility studies and environmental assessments. These steps are intended to prepare for the official groundbreaking of the project, scheduled for early 2026.
The leadership meeting also addressed the renovation of the historic “Radio Juba” premises. The site is being prepared to serve as the new headquarters for the Ministry, which currently operates from an overcrowded facility.
Engineer Mabe revealed that the renovation is expected to cost approximately 4 million US dollars, equivalent to around 18.4 billion South Sudanese pounds (SSP) at the official exchange rate of 1 USD = 4,600 SSP (July 2025).
Renovation Cost | Amount (USD) | Amount (SSP) |
---|---|---|
Radio Juba Site | $4,000,000 | SSP 18,400,000,000 |
