(RUMBEK) – MTN South Sudan in partnership with the Universal Service and Access Fund (USAF) has launched a new mobile network site in Abuyong, a rural area in Lakes State, bringing long awaited mobile connectivity to a region that had no previous access to mobile or internet services.
The network launch is part of MTN South Sudan’s broader commitment to expand communications infrastructure and improve access for rural and underserved populations across the country.
For many years, residents of Abuyong have struggled with poor or non existent network coverage, limiting their ability to communicate, access information, participate in the digital economy or reach essential services.
With the installation of this new site, local families, students, businesses and community leaders now have access to mobile phone services and the internet, marking a major step forward in digital inclusion for the area.
“This is not just about building towers. it IS about creating access to opportunities,” said MTN South Sudan CEO Mapula Bodibe during the launch.
She stressed the importance of connectivity in improving education, economic participation and community development.
The initiative was made possible through MTN’s strategic partnership with the Universal Service and Access Fund, a programme designed to ensure that telecommunications infrastructure reaches areas historically left behind in national development.
Under its renewed 15 year operating licence, MTN South Sudan has pledged to expand its network to cover 90 percent of the country’s population.
The rollout is already underway, with several other rural and remote locations expected to receive similar connectivity upgrades in the coming months.
MTN South Sudan stated that it remains fully committed to investing in infrastructure that supports social inclusion, empowers communities and advances the country’s journey toward full digital transformation.
The company’s expansion efforts align with national development priorities aimed at bridging the digital divide and fostering economic growth in all ten states of South Sudan.
