(YIROL COUNTY) – The Governor of Lakes State, Lieutenant General Rin Tueny Mabor, returned to Yirol on 30 July 2025, following an extended official visit to Juba. His arrival coincided with Martyrs’ Day, a solemn national occasion commemorating those who died during South Sudan’s liberation struggle.
Governor Tueny had been in the capital for nearly a month, engaging with top leadership across government institutions. While no official statement has been released regarding the specifics of the discussions, officials familiar with the trip say the Governor focused on matters of development, security and strengthening cooperation between the state and the national government.
The meetings reportedly included consultations with ministers, security heads and advisors on national planning. The Governor’s agenda aimed at ensuring Lakes State continues contributing to national stability while also securing greater support for local development priorities.
Upon his return, Governor Tueny conveyed a message of goodwill from President Salva Kiir Mayardit to the people of Lakes State. He reaffirmed the President’s ongoing commitment to the progress of the region and the wellbeing of its citizens.
The Governor’s return on Martyrs’ Day carried symbolic significance, marking both a homecoming and a moment of reflection. In his statement, he paid tribute to the thousands who lost their lives in the 21 year war of independence that led to South Sudan’s sovereignty in 2011.
“For those who lost parents, relatives, or loved ones as martyrs, your pain is deeply acknowledged. Their sacrifice is written into the foundation of this nation,” the Governor said.
He encouraged the people of Lakes State to honour the memory of the martyrs not only through mourning but by working collectively toward a peaceful and prosperous South Sudan.
Martyrs’ Day is annually observed across the country to reflect on the cost of freedom and the lives lost in the struggle against oppression. Lakes State, like many parts of the country, was deeply impacted by the conflict, with many families having contributed to the liberation movement.
