UJOSS Praises Security Agencies, Government for Strengthening Media Freedom in Yei

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Union of Journalists of South Sudan, or UJOSS, Central Equatoria State Branch, has commended the Yei River County administration, National Security Service and Police for supporting constructive engagement with journalists in Yei.

Speaking during a media engagement forum in Yei town on Monday, UJOSS coordinator for the Central Equatoria State Yei Branch Buga Alex applauded the representative of the County Commissioner for attending and actively participating throughout the discussions. He described the gesture as a positive sign of growing cooperation and mutual understanding between government institutions and the media.

The UJOSS representative also praised National Security Service and Police officials for their open and professional engagement with journalists, noting that the improved relationship has helped create a safer working environment for media practitioners.

Buga said journalists in Yei have recently enjoyed greater freedom to carry out their duties without fear of harassment or confiscation of their equipment, adding that such progress should be sustained through continued dialogue and collaboration.

According to UJOSS, journalists and security agencies share a responsibility to promote access to accurate, fact-checked and responsible information. The union further welcomed the involvement of security institutions in media discussions, saying their participation is essential in strengthening trust and cooperation between all stakeholders.

The engagement, organised by the UJOSS Central Equatoria State Branch, brought together government officials, security representatives, faith-based leaders, journalists and other stakeholders. UJOSS described the event as a significant milestone in advancing press freedom and professional collaboration in Central Equatoria State.
