Media Stakeholders Push for Stronger Journalism Standards Through Self-Regulation Initiative

(JUBA) – Media stakeholders from across South Sudan have gathered in Juba for a national consultative workshop aimed at strengthening ethical journalism and professional accountability in the country’s media sector.

The workshop, organised by the Union of Journalists of South Sudan and hosted by the Association for Media Development in South Sudan, brings together representatives from the Media Authority, the Commission for Access to Information, media advocacy groups, media houses, and journalists. Participants are discussing the establishment of an independent Media Ethics Council that will oversee the review and implementation of the Code of Conduct and Ethical Principles for Journalists in South Sudan.

Speaking during the opening session on Tuesday, AMDISS Director Ayaa Irene Lokang said the proposed council will handle cases involving breaches of media ethics and professional conduct without interfering with the mandate of the Media Authority. She urged participants to embrace international best practices and contribute openly to the development of an effective self-regulation framework.

The President of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan, Patrick Oyet Charles, described the meeting as an important step towards determining how ethical issues should be managed within the profession. He emphasised the need for journalists to uphold high standards of integrity and accountability.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the Media Authority, Hon. Ajou Luol Akuei, underscored the importance of understanding the distinct role of the Media Authority in regulating, promoting and developing the media sector. He highlighted progress made in improving the media environment, noting that accredited journalists now enjoy greater freedom of movement and access across the country.

The workshop is expected to review the existing code of conduct, identify emerging ethical challenges, and recommend reforms that reflect the realities of modern print, broadcast, and digital media.
