(JUBA) – The Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) and the South Sudan Media Authority have agreed to initiate formal dialogue aimed at addressing key challenges facing the country’s media sector and enhancing cooperation ahead of the anticipated general elections.
The agreement was reached during a meeting held on Thursday between the AMDISS team and the Managing Director of the Media Authority, Hon. Ajou Luol Akuei.
During the meeting, AMDISS Director Ayaa Irene Lokang briefed the Media Authority on the outcomes of a recent media leadership meeting in Japan. The gathering brought together heads of media parastatals, public broadcasters, and independent media representatives to discuss ways of improving access to information while safeguarding press freedom in the lead-up to the elections.
Discussions also focused on the recent ultimatum issued by the Media Authority directing media organisations, networks, outlets, and associations to settle their regulatory fees within one month.
Both parties agreed on the need for a structured engagement process to address concerns affecting the sector and to explore collaborative approaches that would support meaningful media participation during and beyond the electoral period.
The meeting further highlighted concerns regarding the safety and protection of journalists and media houses, with both sides acknowledging the importance of creating a conducive environment for independent journalism.
AMDISS expressed optimism that sustained engagement with media regulatory institutions would contribute to finding lasting solutions to the challenges facing South Sudan’s independent media sector and promote a more informed and democratic society.
