(JUBA CITY) -The Association for Media Development in South Sudan, AMDISS, has held a strategic meeting with the Chairperson of the National Elections Commission, Professor Abednego Akok Kacuol, to discuss the media’s role in the country’s upcoming elections.
During the meeting in Juba on Tuesday, AMDISS Director Ayaa Irene Lokang highlighted the organization’s continued efforts to promote freedom of expression, protect media rights and strengthen journalism through training and mentorship programs across South Sudan.
Lokang called on the National Elections Commission to establish regular media briefings to keep citizens informed about election-related activities.
She proposed weekly or monthly press briefings where the Commission could provide updates on preparations and progress in the electoral process.
The AMDISS Director also briefed the Commission on the organisation’s draft Election Guideline Manual for Journalists.
According to Lokang, the manual is intended to improve professional and ethical reporting before, during and after elections. The document will be shared with key stakeholders, including the National Elections Commission, for review ahead of its official launch.
Speaking during the meeting, National Elections Commission Chairperson Professor Abednego Akok Kacuol acknowledged the important role of the media in the electoral process.
He described the media as a vital bridge between the Commission and the public, helping citizens access accurate information about election activities and developments.
Professor Kacuol further reiterated the Commission’s commitment to working closely with all stakeholders, including the media, to ensure South Sudanese citizens remain informed throughout the electoral process.
AMDISS is a national media advocacy and training organisation dedicated to promoting professional journalism and supporting a free, independent and vibrant media sector in South Sudan.
The meeting comes as stakeholders continue to emphasise the importance of access to information, transparency and responsible journalism in strengthening public participation in future elections.
The role of the media in ensuring credible and transparent elections has taken centre stage in South Sudan. Media stakeholders are calling for regular communication between electoral authorities and the public as preparations for future elections continue.
