Foreign Envoys Urge South Sudan Leaders to Embrace Dialogue and Deliver Peace

(JUBA) – The Chiefs of Mission of the embassies of Germany, Japan, Norway, and the United States have called on South Sudan’s leaders to take urgent steps towards peace, prosperity and national unity following a meeting with Vice President Rebecca Nyandeng de Mabior in Juba.

In a joint statement issued after their meeting on 25 August, the diplomats said they discussed their shared aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous South Sudan, noting that the country’s citizens have waited too long to see lasting stability and development.

The envoys stressed that achieving peace requires immediate action, including the launch of genuine inter-party dialogue and a commitment by political leaders to abandon violence as a means of political competition. According to the statement, sustainable peace can only be secured through inclusive political engagement and constructive leadership.

The diplomats also underscored the importance of economic reforms, urging South Sudan’s leaders to use public revenues to provide essential services, strengthen accountability and create conditions that encourage private investment, supported by improved security and the rule of law.

They expressed confidence that South Sudan can achieve both peace and prosperity if the country’s leaders make the right decisions at this critical moment. The statement reaffirmed the international community’s interest in seeing the nation move beyond conflict and towards a future of stability and economic growth.

The joint statement comes amid continued calls from regional and international partners for political dialogue, effective governance and the full implementation of measures aimed at securing lasting peace in South Sudan.
