(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Residents of Kanjoro and neighboring areas in Yei River County have expressed optimism over the ongoing construction of the Kanjoro-New Site Bridge, reporting significant progress on the community-funded infrastructure project.
The bridge, which had been in poor condition for years, affected movement, access to essential social services and agricultural activities for local communities. In response, the local community partnered with the Yei River County local government to finance the reconstruction, with Point Investment Construction Company contracted to carry out the works.
Residents say visible progress has been made since construction began earlier this month.
Elizabeth Nyoka, a resident of Kanjoro, said she was pleased with the pace of the work and hoped the bridge would soon be completed and opened to the public.
“I am so happy because the construction of the bridge is moving well. We hope the construction company will soon finalise the work so that people can use it freely without challenges,” she said.
Teacher Emmanuel Gilbert, a resident of Lomuku One, also welcomed the progress, noting that major structural work had already been completed.
“There is good work taking place on the bridge. The frame pillars are completed and the work is progressing well. We hope they will soon finish casting concrete on the surface,” Gilbert said.
The bridge is expected to significantly improve transportation, trade and access to services for residents of Kanjoro, Lomuku and surrounding communities.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Bridge Construction Oversight Committee, Johnson Poru Hillary, indicated that the project is nearing completion and preparations are already being considered for its official reopening.
In a social media post, Hillary thanked community members for their continued support and contributions towards the project.
“We will soon start mobilising for a bull, food, music and celebrations for the opening. Your contribution remains important as we are almost there,” he wrote.
The Kanjoro-New Site Bridge is regarded as a vital transport link for local communities and its reconstruction reflects growing collaboration between residents, local authorities and private contractors to address critical infrastructure challenges in Yei River County.
