(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Community members and county authorities in Yei River County on Thursday officially launched the construction of the Kanjoro Bridge along the Lomuku One–New Site road, a community-driven initiative aimed at improving transport and connectivity in the area.
Speaking at the launch, County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo commended the strong cooperation between community members and religious leaders, describing it as a clear sign of unity and partnership in advancing local development.
He pledged the county government’s support through the provision of construction materials and urged the bridge committee to ensure transparency and accountability in managing contributions.
The commissioner also encouraged communities and institutions to involve elders in development efforts, emphasizing their role in providing guidance and blessings.
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Yei, Rev. Alex Lodiong Sakor Eyobo, welcomed the initiative, noting that it highlights the important role communities can play in addressing development challenges.
He said community-led projects often deliver quicker solutions to urgent needs, adding that relying solely on government support can delay progress. He also praised Commissioner Malimbo for working closely with local leaders and residents.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Elias Taban Parangi of the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan called on residents to promote unity across communities and tribes to support development and peaceful coexistence. He commended the commissioner for demonstrating solidarity with the people through the project.
Johnson Poru Hillary, Chairperson of the Bridge Construction Committee, said the bridge and road will significantly improve movement between Yei River County and neighboring Lainya County, particularly benefiting residents traveling from Mukaya.
He added that the project will ease access to markets and schools, especially for children, while boosting local trade and economic activities.
Paramount Chief Joseph Brown of Yei River County appealed to stakeholders and well-wishers to support the project with resources to ensure its successful completion.
