(MOROBO COUNTY) — The Commissioner of Morobo County, Joseph Mawa John Okuba, on Thursday officially launched the construction of a permanent County Pavilion at the Freedom Square, marking a significant step in the county’s infrastructure development.
The project will transform the current temporary pavilion into a permanent structure, aimed at improving public event facilities within the county.
Speaking during the launch, Commissioner Mawa expressed appreciation to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for funding the initiative. He also assured the implementing partner, Support for Peace and Education Development Program (SPEDP), of the county government’s full cooperation.
“Infrastructure development is a key pillar of my administration’s agenda,” Mawa said, pledging to provide adequate security and support to ensure the project is completed within the planned timeframe.
The Commissioner further called on local landowners to make land available for investors interested in development projects, emphasizing that such efforts—when properly regulated by local authorities—are essential for advancing growth in the county.
Paramount Chief Naphtali Yakani welcomed the project, noting that it had been long overdue. He said the pavilion would help reduce the high costs associated with renting tents for major public events. He also urged SPEDP to adhere strictly to the construction timeline.
Representing SPEDP, Apai Jacky confirmed that construction activities are set to begin within the month. According to her, engineers are already mobilizing construction materials and machinery are being deployed to the site.
Apai also appealed to the county authorities to maintain stable security conditions, stressing that past waves of insecurity had delayed the project, which was initially scheduled for 2023.
The pavilion project is funded by UNMISS and implemented by the Support for Peace and Education Development Program (SPEDP), reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen community infrastructure and promote development in Morobo County.
