(YEI / LAINYA COUNTIES) – The Organization for Agricultural Opportunities (OFAO), a national humanitarian and development organization, has distributed more than 3,000 tree seedlings to over 3,000 households in Yei and Lainya counties as part of efforts to promote environmental conservation and strengthen community resilience.
The distribution, which took place in Yei Town Payam on Thursday, is being implemented under the Community Driven Rural Development (CDRD) Project. The initiative targets beneficiaries in Minyori, Pokula, Gimunu and Yei Town bomas, as well as several bomas in Mukaya and Kupera payams of Lainya County.
According to OFAO, the tree-planting initiative aims to restore degraded ecosystems, build resilient communities, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
In a statement, the organization called on communities to support its agroforestry efforts, which are being led by community-based Disaster Risk Management groups.
“Together, we are promoting sustainable land management, restoring degraded landscapes, strengthening community resilience, and creating a greener future for generations to come,” the statement said.
OFAO noted that the tree distribution forms part of broader interventions under the SPEED Project, which continues to support resilient communities, sustainable agriculture, and lasting peace along the South Sudan-Uganda border.
The project is funded by Caritas Switzerland and seeks to enhance environmental protection while improving livelihoods in communities vulnerable to climate-related challenges.
