OFAO Trains Farmers and Cooperative Leaders on Sustainable Resource Management in Mukaya

(MUKAYA / LAINYA COUNTY)– The Organization for Agriculture Opportunities (OFAO), through its SPEED Project, has launched a five-day Training of Trainers (ToT) programme aimed at strengthening the capacity of cooperatives, farmer groups, and local leaders in sustainable natural resource management in Mukaya Payam of Lainya County.

The training has brought together 80 participants, including men and women from 17 local structures, comprising cooperatives, farmer groups, and local government authorities from the payam and boma levels.

According to OFAO, the training focuses on key areas such as Natural Resource Management (NRM), agroecology, biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation and mitigation, disaster risk reduction, and conflict management around natural resources.

The initiative seeks to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in managing natural resources sustainably while promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices that can improve livelihoods and build resilient communities.

Facilitators said the programme is designed to empower local leaders and farmer organisations with the expertise needed to address environmental challenges, reduce resource-related conflicts, and support sustainable agricultural production.

Participants are expected to transfer the knowledge gained during the training to other community members, helping to expand awareness and adoption of climate-smart farming practices across the region.

Speaking on the importance of the initiative, OFAO noted that strengthening the capacity of local cooperatives and farmer groups is essential for promoting long-term productivity, food security, and environmental sustainability.

Through the SPEED Project, communities are being supported to develop locally driven solutions that balance agricultural development with the protection of natural resources.

The training marks another step in OFAO’s commitment to building stronger farmer organisations and resilient communities capable of adapting to climate change and managing natural resources responsibly for future generations.
