(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – More than 20 abduction cases have been recorded across Greater Yei, affecting the movement and operations of humanitarian workers and leaving many residents living in fear.
A stakeholders’ meeting held in Yei brought together commissioners from Yei River, Lainya and Morobo counties, security officials, members of parliament, humanitarian and development partners, traditional leaders, women and youth representatives, religious leaders, civil society organisations and community structures.
The meeting focused on reported cases of abduction and insecurity affecting communities and humanitarian operations across Greater Yei.
Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo called for collective action to improve security and protect civilians and humanitarian workers.
He said the security of the population is a shared responsibility involving government authorities, security agencies, communities and humanitarian partners.
Commissioner Malimbo commended Across and CBM for bringing stakeholders together and urged residents not to ignore security threats. He stressed the importance of cooperation and timely reporting of incidents.
Bishop Emeritus Hillary Adeba said insecurity and abductions had left many residents living in fear and affected their freedom of movement. He called on security agencies to strengthen civilian protection, monitor the activities of suspected armed groups and pursue measures aimed at preventing further abductions.
CBM Country Director Francis Okello said communities and humanitarian organisations had experienced the effects of recent abductions. He urged stakeholders to maintain open communication and work collectively to address insecurity. He also noted the importance of empowering young people, saying their involvement is critical to the future of the communities.
The Executive Director of Across, Dr Elisama Wani Michael, commended Commissioner Malimbo for initiating the meeting. He said Across has worked with communities in Yei for many years, including supporting people with disabilities, farmers and communities with water services. He warned that continued insecurity could disrupt humanitarian activities and affect donor support to the region.
The Commissioner of Morobo County expressed concern over the reported abductions of civilians and humanitarian workers, urging community leaders and residents to report security incidents to the relevant authorities.
Lainya County Commissioner Huda Laila Michael called for a collective response to insecurity and appealed for greater employment opportunities for young people. She also encouraged dialogue and peaceful engagement with armed groups as part of efforts to end violence and promote stability across Greater Yei.
