(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Yei River County, Emmanuel Taban Seme, has strongly condemned the recent rise in abductions and attacks targeting humanitarian workers operating in the area.
In a press statement issued Tuesday evening, Commissioner Taban Seme described the acts as criminal and a violation of humanitarian principles and laws of engagement.
“Humanitarian personnel are present in Yei River County solely to deliver essential and life-saving assistance to vulnerable members of our community. Any act of intimidation, violence, or unlawful detention against them undermines humanitarian efforts and the broader interests of our people,” the statement partly read.
The commissioner also expressed concern over increasing incidents of looting and robbery targeting innocent civilians and traders across the county.
He called on the unidentified perpetrators to immediately cease such acts, warning that the county government will not tolerate actions that threaten peace and civilian safety.
Commissioner Seme reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding international humanitarian law, protecting civilians, and creating a conducive environment for both residents and humanitarian agencies operating in the county.
No group has claimed responsibility for the recent abductions.
Yei River County, located approximately 100 miles southwest of Yei town, has continued to experience recurring insecurity since the outbreak of conflict in 2016.
