(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has urged the National Elections Commission (NEC) to intensify preparations for South Sudan’s general elections scheduled for 22 December 2026, emphasizing the importance of delivering a credible, free and fair electoral process.
The President made the remarks on Friday after receiving a progress report from NEC Chairperson, Prof. Abednego Akok Kachuol, on the commission’s ongoing preparations and assessment missions conducted across the country’s ten states and three administrative areas.
President Kiir underscored the need for the electoral body to ensure that all necessary arrangements are in place to facilitate a transparent and inclusive election process capable of strengthening democracy and public confidence in the country’s institutions.
The meeting comes as South Sudan moves closer to what is expected to be a significant milestone in its democratic transition, with institutions working to lay the groundwork for the December elections.
The National Elections Commission has recently been carrying out assessment missions across the country to evaluate preparedness and identify requirements necessary for the successful conduct of the elections.
With voter registration expected to begin soon, attention is now turning to the commission’s ability to implement key electoral activities within the remaining timeframe before citizens head to the polls in December.
