President Kiir Signs Elections Act Amendment Ahead of December 2026 Polls

(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has assented to the National Elections Act, 2012 (Amendment) Bill, 2026, a move expected to strengthen South Sudan’s legal framework as the country prepares for the December 2026 General Elections.

The signing of the amended law on Monday marks a significant milestone in the country’s electoral preparations and is seen as a key step toward ensuring that the upcoming polls are conducted under a clearer and more harmonized legal framework.

According to the Presidential Press Unit, the amendment revises provisions of the National Elections Act, 2012 and the subsequent 2023 amendment in order to address inconsistencies within the existing legislation and align the electoral laws with the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan, 2011, as amended.

Government officials say the revised law is intended to streamline electoral processes and provide a stronger legal foundation for the conduct of the December elections.

The amendment comes at a critical time as electoral institutions intensify preparations for what is expected to be South Sudan’s first general election since gaining independence in 2011. The government has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to delivering a credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral process.

Observers say the enactment of the amended legislation could help address legal gaps and provide greater clarity to stakeholders involved in the electoral process, including political parties, election administrators, and voters.
