Yei Farmers Urged to Prepare for Dry-Season Farming

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Farmers in Yei River County have been urged to begin preparing land along riverbanks for dry-season vegetable production.

The Director of Agriculture and Forestry in Yei River County, Asiki Isaac, says early land preparation could help increase vegetable production, reduce shortages in local markets and provide farmers with income during the dry season.

Speaking to Access Radio on Wednesday afternoon, Asiki encouraged farmers in both rural and urban areas to take advantage of water sources along riverbanks to grow vegetables.

“We are getting into long dry spelt season about 4-5 months from December to April and in this duration, we shall discover that there will be no vegetables in the market and we encourage farmers to prepare their lands for dry season vegetable planting because we don’t want our markets to run dry but farmers can use this period close to the riverbanks to produce vegetables and that will be a great opportunity for vegetable production”

Asiki says farmers can concentrate on commonly consumed vegetables and other crops that can be grown near riverbanks during the dry season.

“ Most farmers normally go for vegetables and among these vegetables we have tomatoes, dodo, okra, cabbage and green papers among others and they can also plan sweet potatoes and maize grains along the riverbank and these will help them to earn good money and can boost business and the market will not lack vegetables in the market”

He says dry-season farming could help farmers generate income while ensuring a steady supply of vegetables to local markets.
