(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A child rights activist in Yei River County has cautioned parents, teachers and school authorities over the safety of students camping away from their homes as they prepare for final examinations next month.
According to local observers, some primary and secondary school candidates have moved from their homes to stay in school compounds, churches and rented houses in Yei town while preparing for the examinations, raising concerns about supervision and parental care.
Dominic Living Wawa, head of Kikiji National Orphanage Centre, said students staying without adequate supervision could be exposed to sexual abuse, health and other safety risks.
He appealed to parents and guardians to take responsibility for safeguarding their children while they are living away from home.
“I am not speaking this against their ambition but for their own safety but also no exams is worthy against any child’s life therefore, I am urging that we need to protect our children from injuries, sicknesses or abuses as their camping around our areas ahead of their exams and that is why I am asking all parents and guidance of Yei that you need to put a watch on your children before allowing them to go for camping”
Wawa also called on teachers and school administrations to ensure candidates are properly supervised at their camping locations, whether inside or outside school premises.
“To the school administration and teachers, please we need supervision for these children because as a teacher you need to know that these children are in your full care and protection and that is why we call on all school administration in Yei to ensure that these children are registered, supervised, monitored, what they eat, medical care, provided clean water and also issues of harassments and consumption of drugs”
He further urged candidates to remain focused on their studies and avoid activities that could affect their education, health and safety.
“TO the students themselves, I want you to understand this camping is your books as you go out from your home and don’t use this camping as an opportunity for joining wrong groups, drinking alcohol, fighting or entering sexual activities which will ruin your life”
