Yei Farmers Seek Markets for 57 Tonnes of Seeds

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Agricultural authorities in Yei River County are calling on development partners, companies, NGOs and agro-dealers to help local farmers secure markets for 57 metric tonnes of seed grains produced in the county.

The County Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Asiki Isaac, says cooperative and progressive farmers have harvested quality seeds that are ready for sale and use in crop production.

The seeds include maize, groundnuts, sesame, beans and soya beans, produced by farmers in Mugwo, Otogo and Yei Town payams.

Asiki said farmers have produced significant quantities of seeds, but the local market remains limited.

“We have farmers in Yei who were engaged in seed production, and the majority of the farmers have produced 57 tonnes of maize, groundnuts and sesame ready for sale. The farmers have produced that much, but the market is low in Yei, and that is why we are calling on companies, NGOs and agro-dealers to support farmers with big markets outside Yei.”

Asiki urged development partners and agricultural companies to consider sourcing seeds from Yei River County instead of relying solely on imported seeds, saying locally produced varieties are suited to local production conditions.

He said the seed production benefited from technical support provided by development partners, including GIZ.

According to Asiki, the seeds have been examined and certified by the County Seed Control Board and tested locally.

“All these seeds are quality and have been examined and certified by the County Seed Control Board. They are good right from land preparation, production and harvest, and they have been tested by our laboratory and are 100 per cent proven good for germination.”

Asiki said stronger market linkages would help farmers sell their seeds and encourage continued local seed production in Yei River County.
