(YEI COUNTY) – The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) has officially handed over a multipurpose farmers training facility in Yei River County in Central Equatoria State. The ceremony took place on Wednesday in Gimunu Boma, approximately four miles east of Yei town along the Yei-Juba Road.
The facility is funded by the World Bank and equipped with solar power and modern irrigation systems. It will serve as a centre for farmer training, farm demonstration, crop storage and processing. Local authorities hope it will strengthen local food production and processing.
Central Equatoria State Agriculture Minister Lily Kapuki expressed gratitude to the national government, the World Bank and FAO for their support. She emphasised the ministry’s commitment to ensuring the facility is fully utilised to enhance food security in the region.
Kapuki urged the national government to improve the Yei-Juba Road and provide farm tools and seeds to increase agricultural productivity in Yei River County. She encouraged local farmers to embrace large scale farming and called on communities to make additional land available for mechanised farming projects. The minister highlighted a target of 250 fedans to be allocated for large scale food production in the county.

She also appealed for the establishment of a national agricultural research centre and encouraged youth participation in farming. She suggested youth led seed companies could support domestic seed multiplication, purchase and distribution across South Sudan.
Yei River County Agriculture Director Asiki Isaac praised FAO and the World Bank for their support, highlighting the potential for increased food production using the facility’s training and processing equipment:
“This is a positive step for development in Yei, and farmers are encouraged to produce enough crops and utilise the facility to improve productivity.”
Local farmer James Loda welcomed the facility, describing it as a significant relief for farmers who have long faced challenges due to limited access to modern training and farming technology.
“This facility provides training in irrigation, processing and mechanised farming. We are extremely happy for this support.”
Yei River County is located in South Sudan’s green belt region, known for its fertile soil and favourable rainfall, which makes it suitable for agricultural production.
