(JUBA) – The Ministry of Finance and Planning and the African Development Bank have on Tuesday launched a US$267 million Uganda–South Sudan electricity interconnection project aimed at improving access to reliable and affordable power in South Sudan.
Officials say the project forms part of efforts to integrate South Sudan into the East African Power Pool, with the African Development Bank supporting the country’s efforts to import electricity from neighboring Uganda.
Earlier, electricity imported from Uganda was commissioned in the border town of Nimule in Eastern Equatoria State, marking a step towards extending the power connection to Juba and other major towns.
Speaking during the launch, the Undersecretary for Planning in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Benjamin Ayali Koyongwa, thanked the African Development Bank and other development partners for their continued cooperation with South Sudan.
African Development Bank representative Fouzia Haji said electricity is important for households and businesses, adding that the project, once completed, is expected to contribute to economic development in both South Sudan and Uganda.
The launch was also attended by the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Energy and Dams, Madhieu Achuil Mawien, Ugandan representatives and officials from the Ministry of Finance and Planning’s Aid Coordination Directorate.
