Civil Society Leader Urges More Police Patrols in Yei

(YEI RIVER COUNTY, CES) – A Civil society leader in Yei River County is calling on police authorities to intensify night and daytime patrols and strengthen relations with local communities amid concerns over recurring insecurity.

Modi Arkangelo, head of the Yei Civil Society Forum, told Access Radio on Tuesday morning that incidents of attacks, killings and break-ins, particularly around Yei Town Payam, are raising concerns over the safety of civilians.

Last week, a man was reportedly killed along Kinji Street in Rumoju Boma. Police said three suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Modi urged police authorities to develop sustainable measures to address recurring insecurity in the town and surrounding areas.

“My appeal to the security organs, more especially the police, is to intensify their work through patrols at night and during the day because we have incidents where people’s houses have been broken into,” Modi said. “Let them not concentrate in the town, but also move to other areas.”

He also called on police leadership to strengthen police-community relations by regularly engaging chiefs, local leaders and residents to build trust and improve the timely sharing of security information.

“Let them plan and visit the area leaders like the chiefs and ask questions with the people because they are there to be with the people,” he said. “Let them move and build relationships with the people to build trust and confidence because if there is anything in the community, people will be able to call them timely.”

Meanwhile, Yei River County Police Inspector Major General Yoasa Lujang Kamba warned young people against joining gangs or engaging in criminal activities.

“We are warning young people against joining gangs and engaging in criminal activities. Those suspected of involvement will be identified and investigated,” Kamba said.

He also appealed to parents, community leaders and other authorities to work closely with police to prevent youth violence and criminal activity in the county.
