40 Peace Ambassadors Undergo Training in Yei Town

(YEI RIVER COUNTY, CES ) – Forty members of community peace structures in Yei River County are undergoing a five-day training aimed at strengthening grassroots peacebuilding, reconciliation and conflict prevention.

The training, organized by the South Sudanese national NGO Center for Democracy and Development, CEDED, brings together representatives from five Boma Peace Committees, Payam and County Peace Committees, as well as local government structures in Yei Town Payam.

In a social media statement on Tuesday, CEDED said the training is designed to strengthen local capacity in conflict prevention, mediation, early warning and rapid response, dialogue and reconciliation.

CEDED says persistent conflicts between cattle keepers and crop farmers, as well as competition over water points and forest resources, continue to threaten livelihoods and social cohesion in Yei River County.

The organization said, “Peace begins with empowered communities and collective action. By placing community leaders, women, youth, elders and persons with disabilities at the forefront, we are investing in inclusive leadership and sustainable grassroots peacebuilding.”

The training comes amid continuing community concerns over insecurity in parts of Yei. Residents have previously told Access Radio about conflicts involving some young people, locally referred to as Nigas, as well as reported armed attacks and kidnappings affecting civilians in recent months.
