(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Health authorities, religious leaders and community representatives in Yei River County have called for improved healthcare services amid concerns over shortages of medicines, specialist doctors and essential medical supplies.
The appeal was made during a thanksgiving prayer and the reopening of the renovated County Health Department office in Yei on Saturday.
The County Health Department Director described the renovated office as a renewed commitment to improving healthcare delivery.
“This office is more than the opening of a renovated building. It symbolizes a new beginning, renewed responsibility and a stronger commitment to deliver quality health services to our people,” the director said.
The facility will serve as a center for planning, supervision, monitoring and coordination of health activities across Yei River County.
Speaking at the event, Caretaker Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme called for improved planning in the training and recruitment of local health workers.
He also raised concerns about donations of expired medicines and medical supplies with short remaining shelf lives, urging health partners to provide safe medicines with sufficient time before expiry.
“We are not a dumping site,” Seme said.
Emeritus Bishop Hillary Adeba also called for increased availability of essential medicines and specialist doctors, particularly for children, women and patients requiring eye and dental care.
Meanwhile, Ajania Amude from the Department of Gender, Child and Social Welfare called for greater reproductive health awareness, early antenatal care and stronger protection of women, girls, children and other vulnerable people.
“We ensure that no woman or girl is left behind in Yei River County,” Amude said.
The speakers stressed that improved facilities must be accompanied by adequate medicines, qualified health workers and stronger cooperation between government, health partners and communities.
