(JUBA) – The National Ministry of Health has deployed supportive supervision teams to multiple locations across South Sudan to assess health service delivery and gain a comprehensive understanding of the overall health situation in the country.
The supportive supervision mission is being led by the Project Management Unit (PMU), the body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP).
The teams are currently on the ground in Yirol, Kapoeta, Aweil, Yambio and several other locations, with additional areas scheduled to be covered in the coming days.
The mission aims to monitor project implementation, engage with health workers and local authorities, identify challenges and strengthen the delivery of quality healthcare services across the country.
The Ministry of Health said it remains committed to improving health systems and ensuring that all South Sudanese have access to quality, equitable and resilient healthcare services.
The supervision mission follows a high level visit to the Infectious Disease Unit along the Juba Yei road on 27 June 2026, where the United States Ambassador to South Sudan, Michael J. Adler, assessed Ebola preparedness alongside the Executive Director of the National Public Health Institute, Dr Kediende Chong, and representatives from the World Health Organization, UNDP South Sudan and UNICEF South Sudan.
The inspection aimed to evaluate operational readiness, including case management capabilities, infection prevention and control measures, laboratory coordination, surveillance systems, emergency response mechanisms and the availability of essential supplies for Ebola preparedness.
During the visit, the ambassador received detailed briefings from technical teams on the current preparedness status, ongoing readiness activities and measures to enhance the country’s ability to rapidly detect, investigate, isolate and respond to suspected Ebola cases.
Ambassador Adler commended Dr Kediende Chong and the National Public Health Institute for the significant progress made in strengthening South Sudan’s public health emergency preparedness and response systems.
He also acknowledged the dedication of technical personnel and frontline health workers in maintaining high levels of readiness despite challenging operational conditions.
He said the United States Government remains a committed partner in supporting South Sudan’s health security agenda and the ongoing collaboration with the National Public Health Institute.
The ambassador noted that sustained investments in surveillance, laboratory systems, emergency operations, workforce development and infection prevention and control are critical to protecting the population against emerging infectious disease threats.
Following the inspection, Dr Kediende Chong expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from the United States Government and its partners.
He said the Institute remains committed to strengthening preparedness, improving early warning systems and ensuring rapid response to public health emergencies through effective coordination with both national and international partners.
NPHI said these efforts will significantly enhance health security for the people of South Sudan and that it values ongoing collaboration with its partners and remains dedicated to advancing public health excellence in a healthier, safer South Sudan.
