(JUBA) – United States Ambassador Michael J. Adler visited the Infectious Disease Unit along the Juba-Yei road on Saturday to inspect South Sudan’s readiness for a possible outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease.
The Ambassador was joined by the Executive Director of the National Public Health Institute, Dr. Kediende Chong, and representatives from the World Health Organization, the United Nations Development Programme and UNICEF.
The team examined the facility’s ability to manage cases, control infection, coordinate laboratory work, run surveillance systems and respond to emergencies. They also checked the supply of essential materials needed for Ebola preparedness.
Technical teams briefed the Ambassador on the current state of readiness. They outlined ongoing activities and explained measures in place to detect, investigate, isolate and respond to suspected Ebola cases without delay.
The Ambassador praised Dr. Chong and the National Public Health Institute for what he called significant progress in building the country’s public health emergency systems.
He also recognised the commitment of technical staff and frontline health workers who maintain high readiness despite difficult working conditions.
He said the United States Government remains a firm partner in supporting South Sudan’s health security.
The Ambassador added that continued investment in surveillance, laboratory systems, emergency operations, workforce development and infection control is vital to protect the population from new infectious disease threats.
In a statement after the inspection, Dr. Chong thanked the United States Government and its partners for their ongoing support.
He said the Institute remains committed to strengthening preparedness, improving early warning systems and ensuring a fast response to public health emergencies through close coordination with national and international partners.
